Folk Ballads of the Santa Cruz Mountains

by Danny Goldberg

The ones concerned will all agree

we’ve swirled into eternity

so on the way please don’t forget,

be kind,

you’ll find

there’s no regret

& when the twist can turn the other way

there will be a bed where we all can lay

so be the word

the word is be

does it mean to you what it means to me?

To see the way will set you free

some white oak wisdom from an ancient tree

& this is what it told to me;

the sun will shine

the birds will play

& there will always be another day

so which ever route you choose to take

don’t be asleep

please be awake

& to understand the way to go

that’s one thing for sure we’ll never know

so choose a path for better or best

if you get the point

you can forget the rest

Here we go

on our sacred way

playfully we’ve gone astray

to sift the sand

for native seeds

& walk the land

exchanging beads

The local merfolk

blink their eyes

a wink before the full moon rise

to kindred spirits of yester-year

nymph’s sing songs the elves can hear

to guide our way beneath the sea

beyond the waves infinity

Red-winged blackbirds skirt the crow

seagulls sing the undertow

Mermaids share

oh what a sight

Fairy folk remain in flight

Here they join in a silver glow

To show us what the children know

In this place we know where time stood still

there is an ancient pathway to the water-mill

It’s high above the echoing ghosts

of the long lost sailors on the ragged coasts

There is no one here in search of worry

& the wise ones remind us, there is no hurry

Their beards reveal the time gone by

when people knew, there was time to sigh

We revel in their untold relief

where surfers dance beyond the reef

with the mermaids who brought them down

upon their demise we do not frown

Their spirits keep the ungrateful out

from the land beyond their hollow shout

I mean way beyond the never known

beside the path beneath the stone

where dreams are kept for other days

to remind us there are many ways

to climb about or reach the top

& then again it might not stop

but you can find a dream beneath those rocks

& start living life not watching clocks

The solution is not always there

burden we will always bear

this is the way the story goes

eternal questions

no one knows

A tangled turn

on an uncertain path

may lead you to a natural bath

there you’ll heal & feel the earth

its’ inner core gives life through birth

complete the circle

close the round

find a place where we can ground

to keep in tune with plants & trees

& not forget the birds & bees

cause all of that & this is really fun

but this web of life can’t be un-spun

so don’t see doubt

for your doubt can’t see

& there’s always a way to be set free

so if you’re looking for the way, way out

you’ll always find an untangled route

We can pause here for a moment to catch another breeze

listen for the channeling, take heed within our ease

A chance to thank the fog  for disappearing in the air

whirling winds of change like a roaring running mare

She’s a rolling, ringing beauty & will grace us with her smile

that will take us down the road where love is back in style

Hummingbirds reap the essence

a sparrow calls her mate

this may be more than springtime magic

it could be destiny or could be fate

Soothsayers share their secrets

in Sanskrit or in rhyme

stay lucid to your dreams

eternal bliss will come in time

A bobcat’s splendor

a dragon’s spine

the edge of never

a broken rhyme

Tafoni crumbles

the mystics know

the earth is shifting

the redwoods grow

We eat the sorrel

& live the dream

a native son

a star hill stream

An ancient wisdom

of times gone by

when the falcons soared

where red-tails fly

Coyote’s magic

the wagon wheel

an antique bottle

a Shaman’s seal

There’s a way from here

to never known

the place where tales

& day dreams roam

The lip beyond the other side

where sun still shines

& thought streams glide

We feel the free

and taste the high

on beams of light

we learn to fly

where ravens fledge on windy days

a way away from the poison haze

The air here’s filled with fantasy

I think you know where this might be

A place inside

where creeks still flow

canyons deepen

& hilltops glow

Bless this place where we call home

for blessing us with nature’s poem

A Chieftain Wizard

holds sacred bones

high atop Ohloney stones

Beards of lichen weave the tales

we speak to trees & to the whales

A peaceful place where we call home

when we rest or when we roam

Where angels glisten endlessly

in snowy seaside ecstasy

Their crystals form our morning gaze

a space in Norway above the haze

Where elk still sing their wayward song

to remind us as we walk along

that the weary traveler knows the way

beyond the Skyline above the bay

his mystic journey will help you smile

oasis dreams beside the Nile

Rainbows fall, in seeds of hope

to open up our vision scope

Magic lies within the light

You can even see it in the night

We seek refuge on the ocean

it’s a rare endangered day

the edge again to nowhere

where children run to play

Down from Skyline hilltops

to the seaside breeze

where we wander through the fields

of Scarlet Pimpernel with ease

It must be a spell from westward

where the wisdom wheels unwind

& free up all the answers

most people cannot find

There lies ancient secrets

beneath driftwood in the sand

where dunes go on forever

& ocean touches land

The yarrow grows to heal us

and keep away our fear

on cliffs of twisted cypress

if you listen you will hear

the beat of cyclic journeys

revolving in the air

a time for quiet vision quest

where mystics walk with care

We’re searching for the symbols

within this great abyss

broken words the waves keep rolling

the words most people miss

Keep your dreams unto the future

when everyone feels free

Let words that I have written

create some harmony

High we sit upon the tip

envision seaside chimes

Around the well of the old man’s spell

where answers come in rhymes

Springtime dazzles dreamland

the Poppy’s grow so fine

we’ll be riding on a shooting star

through fields of columbine

Another magic trickster

a bandit in the trees

rolls in & out of Eden

with an arrow aimed to please

Don’t rush home for treasures

Forget-me-Not’s the key

This is the way to fairyland

arrive & you will see

I know this path is long

I know not what to try

laughing people laugh

& laughing people cry

The end is not forever

this road goes on at last

the waves are laughing something

the dead man laughs the past

His wings convey the rainbows

a twinkle in his eye

Love shines through his magic

his brushes paint the sky

These trips are not like something

the jester twisted up

the well is very deep, he said

that’s where I dropped the cup.

The views are quite complete indeed

the sunsets always grand

you know you hear the rainbows

you know you know the band.

The kids begin to scramble

bells ring out our fate

the doors are always open

when the spirits congregate

When laughing people cry

or an angel’s broke a wing

I’ll be tumbling with the tides

I can hear the children sing

A beat beyond the rainbow

where nothing’s left untold

every answer’s answered

no one’s ever cold

Everyone’s laughing something

that’s the way the story goes

Laughing's not for nothing

this the prophet knows

We all come back from somewhere

in a time we can’t relate

our souls fly out the window

to open every gate

          Like whispers of dragons

          we’re here for a while

          the wind howls backwards

          like dancers in style

          they’re misfits of magic

          caught out on breeze

          or soaring like Falcons

          with Kestrels at ease

          The stones here tell stories

          like words in a rhyme

          a language of nature

            on the mountains we climb

The sun’s reassuring as it opens the sky

          we greet it with smiles

          as clouds pass us by

          we’re grateful again

          for natures sweet words

          our spirits in sunlight

          can sing with the birds

A distant recollection

when every dream came true

where people always smiled

& the sky was always blue

Now the ship’s without a mast, my friend

maybe the captain took a snooze

saving mother nature

people need to choose

Every bit of paradise

drugged by corporate greed

the kind organic gatherings

the kids who plant the seed

A time

a spot

a rainbow

present, future, past

a place the magic happens

beyond the shadows cast

Art flowers

People listen

let each moment flow

laughing people laugh

cause laughing people know

Just can’t break those rules, she said

you know it’s out of style

you’d think they’d make a rule for that

to add it to your file

They’re leaning on a weak excuse

in fear of the unknown

where art goes on forever

& all the seeds are sown.

The trees are growing freely

some people heed the signs

power points its finger

money draws the lines

They tried to stop the art forever

let it slip between the crack

art flows back inside a rainbow

to reveal the love they lack.

I hope it lights up something

a catalyst

a note

a bit of something special

to seal these words I wrote

I thank you so completely

with everything I know

the magic, the infinity

to let our people grow

We’re on the verge

in space at last

where love & freedom ring

back to our intentions

where children always sing

The music speaks in colors

listen & you’ll see

dance inside the sound

let yourself feel free

If you loop around the bend

you’ll unfold upon the scene

a jester writing symbols

whose sense is delicate & keen

If you’ve got some time to linger

& float inside this dream

we can work together

to seal the broken seam

Dreaming keeps the shadows from ruining your life

& letting in false attitude

that causes people strife.

Wrapping the May Pole

Free flowin’

daisy rollin’

may day fills the soul

we wrap the ancient wisdom

while circling the pole

Flowers of our secrets

recollections of the past

the sun’s music lights our spirits

this memory will last

Pagan dreams of magic

where ends do not exist

another druid symbol

I hope you get the gist

Following the breeze indeed

skipping on the tide

searching for a simple sign

way deep down inside

It’s a song the little people

wrote so long ago

that we sing around the circle

to remind us what we know

When we roll

or when we stroll

our answers come to form

to see us through our labyrinth

bring lightning to the storm

We’ll jump the hesitation, catch the inside out

a peninsula in the sea of dreams where we can walkabout

Folks become the legends

or do legends become folk?

This is an ancient riddle

a way the little people joke

its all in good intention to see beyond the walls

that can be placed around our dreams

& stop our flowing waterfalls

if you tumble or if you splash

you might just see this inside out

but if you close your heart to magic

your mind will fill with doubt

The ”Edge of the World” is what they say

“This is a place where we can stay”

he told me on his way down:

“You can be a king without a crown,

when high above Tunitas creek,

answers lie in the waves we seek”

It’s a splendid way to spend the day

nine miles south of Half Moon Bay

If all was plenty, we would all relate

our dreams can fill an empty plate

we can see the hope where we reside

it can help us through & be our guide

The ones who stay can here the worlds lost cries

they don’t believe the corporate lies

Dig deep & you will find more still

but seek in search not for thrill

you’ll find this is a helpful clue

I know you know

It’s nothing new

search hard & long to find a sign

laugh & sing & sip the wine

see & paint & open doors

cause in the game of life there are no scores

& there’s a lot beyond this time we know

when we open up & let it show

Silver glitters from far away

Off snow swept tree tops on a winters day

A white surprise on Skyline peaks

A sight we haven’t seen in weeks

Or months or years or even more

High above the valley floor

We live beneath a redwood grove

Our only warmth is in our love

You can feel it’s light in splintered rays

Often shadowed by our darkened days

Above, beyond this weary tale

There’s a sturdy mast that holds our sail

It will take us to the other side

If the sea is still we might just glide

Untangled words speak some soul

Blazing sunbeams make me whole

Nourished mornings turn to lazy days

Can we stay afloat in this starry gaze?

There is a seed of hope in this faded shell

like a rescued ring from the wishing well

Which way to go to find a trail

anyone you choose you will not fail

Irish Ridge is always pretty sweet

Bald Knob’s not bald

Though it’s still a treat

You may find a way beyond the mist

To sandstone caves where Madrone trees twist

Blue Blossom’s steep & Spring Board too

The one you choose is the one for you

Both get you there

Where ever there might be

& when you arrive, you might see

the trails that take you way on down

to the turn off for the tree house town

If you miss this, you may find the hermits way

where the lady bugs gather to mate & play

when you turn back up towards fairyland

the trails unnamed to you expand

it may lead you up toward Sky peak

but the wrong way up could take a week

If you find your way beyond the hill

the birds sing softly when the air is still

Next a jaunt to Windy Hill

where the hawks ride currents to get their fill

their nest’s above the Razor Back

here you’ll see the Mountain Lions track

I’ve seen her there a couple times

I’m not saying that because it rhymes

It’s true you see

& you will see

sometimes she sits beside the tree

or at the point of Borel Hill

or down below at the old sawmill

There are views beyond to Alpine Road

& the Ancient Oaks where the seeds are sowed

Here the Redwood Sorrel grows

in this land it rarely snows

The elves they feast where mushrooms rise

three hearts of clover the fairy flies

A stem with four is hard to find

but there, there is an elfin kind

A wish

a dream

a shooting star

if you believe, you’ll travel far

The fairies laugh & dance & sing

on grassy knolls where Bluebells ring

You may see there rainbows here

or a sparkle from an elfin tear

The magic lies beneath the scene

to see the elves you must be keen

They leave behind the morning dew

in the pinks of twilight

you might see a few
